How to use a nasal suction bulb

  • Lay your infant on his or her back.
  • Before using the nasal suction bulb, you may want to use a saline solution, which thins the mucus in your infant’s nose and makes aspiration easier.
  • Squeeze the bulb part of the aspirator while carefully inserting the tip into one of your infant’s nostrils (do not insert the tip too deeply).
  • Remove the tip from your infant’s nostril and dispose of the mucus by squeezing the bulb over a piece of tissue.
  • Repeat steps 1 to 4 for the other nostril.
  • You may need to repeat the above steps several times before most of the mucus is removed.
  • When you are done, wash the suction bulb in warm water with a small amount of detergent. Squeeze the bulb several times to clean out the inside.
